‘25,000 Pencils’ explores collaborative design through making. It will take the form of a 1:1 installation made with colour pencils connected through simple means (a toric rubber joint). 250 architecture students collaborated in the production of the installation at the MUHBA Oliva Artés in Barcelona. Each of the 250 participants added 100 pencils to the installation with no masterplan in the design and only simple instructions given to participants in terms of how to connect one pencil to another. The emerging design grew as a collective endeavor that challenged our preconceptions about what it means to collaborate. Design, in this instance, emerged through the qualities of collective action.
